How to store passwords safely
PURPOSE
Safe password storage reduces the risk of account compromise.
SAFE METHODS
Use an approved password manager or another approved secure storage method.
UNSAFE METHODS
Avoid storing passwords in sticky notes, spreadsheets, notebooks, browser notes, screenshots, or unencrypted files.
LIMIT ACCESS
Only authorized people should have access to stored credentials.
BEST PRACTICE
If a password can be casually photographed from across the room, it is not securely stored.
