How to create a table of contents

PURPOSE A table of contents helps readers navigate long documents. BEFORE YOU START Apply proper heading styles to each section title. STEPS Place the cursor where the table of contents should appear, insert the table of contents using your word processor, and choose the heading levels to include. UPDATE After editing the document, update the table of contents so page numbers and headings stay accurate. BEST PRACTICE Do not manually type a table of contents unless you enjoy future suffering.
