How to name files clearly
PURPOSE
Clear file names make documents easier to search, sort, and understand.
GOOD FILE NAMES INCLUDE
Topic, date, version, owner or department when useful, and document type.
EXAMPLE
Use '2026-05-budget-review-v2.xlsx' instead of 'final_new_reallyfinal.xlsx.'
AVOID
Avoid vague names, special characters that may break systems, and version names that lie to everyone.
BEST PRACTICE
Use dates in YYYY-MM-DD format when chronological sorting matters.
