How to create a standard operating procedure
PURPOSE
A standard operating procedure explains how to perform a repeatable process the same way every time.
INCLUDE
Purpose, scope, owner, prerequisites, steps, roles, exceptions, escalation path, related documents, and review date.
WRITE STEPS CLEARLY
Use numbered instructions, screenshots when helpful, and plain language.
VALIDATE
Have someone who did not write the procedure follow it. If they get stuck, improve the document.
MAINTENANCE
Assign an owner and review schedule so the procedure does not become fossilized nonsense.
