How to write clear instructions
GOAL
Help readers complete a task without guessing.
STRUCTURE
Start with the outcome, list prerequisites, then provide numbered steps in the order they should be performed.
LANGUAGE
Use plain language, short sentences, and action verbs. Avoid unexplained acronyms.
DETAIL LEVEL
Include enough detail for the intended audience, but do not bury the main steps in background information.
TEST
Ask someone else to follow the instructions and identify gaps.
