PURPOSE A proper shutdown closes applications and prevents data loss. STEPS Save work, close applications, use the operating system shutdown option, and wait until the computer powers off. DO NOT Do not unplug power or hold the power button unless the system is completely frozen. WHEN TO SHUT DOWN Shut down before moving certain desktop equipment, during long storage, or when instructed for maintenance. BEST PRACTICE Restart is often better than shutdown for troubleshooting.
