PURPOSE Browser pop-up scams try to scare users into calling fake support, installing software, or entering payment information. COMMON SIGNS Pop-ups may claim your computer is infected, your files are locked, your browser is outdated, or you must call a phone number immediately. WHAT TO DO Do not call numbers shown in pop-ups. Do not click buttons, download tools, or enter information. CLOSE SAFELY Close the browser tab or window. If it will not close, force-close the browser and reopen it without restoring the suspicious page. REPORT If the pop-up appeared after clicking a link or opening a file, report what happened.
