How to handle fake virus warnings
PURPOSE
Fake virus warnings are designed to scare users into unsafe actions.
RED FLAGS
Warnings inside a web page that demand payment, ask you to call support, claim your data is being stolen, or require immediate software installation are suspicious.
WHAT TO DO
Do not click the warning, call the number, or download anything from it.
SAFE RESPONSE
Close the tab or browser. If necessary, disconnect from the page and restart the browser.
REAL SECURITY ALERTS
Legitimate security tools usually identify themselves clearly and do not ask for payment through random browser pop-ups.
REPORT
If you interacted with the warning, report it immediately.
